Wrth weithio yng nghwm Ceiriog, roedd y peirianwyr yn wynebu gosod ceblau ffeibr dros lethrau serth, drwy goedwig drwchus ac ar draws afon fach er mwyn darparu band eang ffeibr ar gyfer 20 cartref a ddisgrifiwyd gan y pentrefwyr eraill fel yr ‘ochr dywyll’ oherwydd eu sefyllfa.

Roedd y dirwedd heriol yn golygu bod dulliau peirianneg traddodiadol fel cloddio ffosydd a gosod cabinetau stryd yn anymarferol – oherwydd y lleoliad yn y cwm – ac nid oedd darparu cysylltiad diwifrau drwy loeren neu radio yn opsiwn chwaith. Ar un pryd roedd yn edrych fel y byddai’r trigolion yn mynd heb gysylltiad yn gyfan gwbl tan i beirianwyr Openreach ddyfeisio ateb arloesol.

Esboniodd prif beiriannydd Openreach Andy Whale, arweinydd y tîm: “Rhaid dweud ei fod yn wahanol iawn i gysylltu bloc fflatiau yn Llundain.

“Llwyddwyd i gysylltu’r rhan helaeth o’r pentref ar waelod y cwm, ond roedd cyrraedd y grŵp yma o 20 cartref ar un ochr o’r cwm yn fater arall. Mae llethr serth o’r tai yma i lawr y cwm, gyda gorchudd o goed a phrysglwyni drosti. Yn ogystal, mae afon yn rhedeg ar hyd gwaelod y cwm felly nid oedd gosod cebl yno’n opsiwn. A byddai’n anodd rhedeg ceblau drwy’r coed, felly penderfynwyd mai’r opsiwn gorau oedd hedfan y cebl dros y coed a’i osod uwchben lein y coed.”

Roedd drôn y tîm yn rhy fach i gludo’r cebl ei hun, felly cysylltwyd lein bysgota gref iddo a’i hedfan oddeutu 100 metr dros y coed. Roedd y lein yn cysylltu â rhaff – a honno’n glwm i gebl ffeibr – y gellid ei dynnu ar hyd y llwybr a ddisgrifiwyd gan y drôn.

Ar ôl cwblhau’r cysylltiadau ar y ddwy ochr, cysylltwyd yr 20 cartref â thechnoleg FTTP (ffeibr i’r adeilad) yn rhedeg yn uniongyrchol i’r gyfnewidfa ger Croesoswallt. Mae’r dechnoleg yn gallu derbyn data ar gyflymder hyd at un gigabit per eiliad (1Gbps) – sef ystod sy’n gallu ffrydio 200 ffilm HD Netflix ar yr un pryd[1].

Ychwanegodd Andy: “Byddai gosod y cebl wrth ddefnyddio dulliau safonol, hyd yn oed os yn bosibl, wedi cymryd dyddiau, ond fel mae’n digwydd gwnaed y gwaith mewn llai nag awr. Byddwn yn profi dulliau a thechnolegau newydd gydol yr amser er mwyn ein helpu i ddarparu band eang ffeibr ymhellach a chyflymach, a chadw costau’n isel. Ar ôl gwneud hyn, yn awr byddwn yn gallu darparu band eang cyflym mewn sefyllfaoedd ble roedd yn amhosibl i bartneriaeth neu fusnes gyfiawnhau gwneud y gwaith yn y gorffennol.”

Chris Devismes, sy’n byw yn un o’r 20 cartref, yw un o’r cyntaf i gael cysylltiad tra-chyflym. Mae wedi gwneud gwahaniaeth mawr i ni ac rwy’n credu bydd yr un yn wir i bawb sy’n byw ym mhentref Pontfadog.”

Ychwanegodd Ed Hunt, cyfarwyddwr rhanbarthol Openreach: “Mae Pontfadog yn enghraifft wych o ddyfalbarhad ein peirianwyr. Byddant yn edrych ar bob ateb peirianneg posibl er darparu band eang ffeibr mewn ardaloedd gwledig diarffordd, a phan na fydd dulliau traddodiadol yn gweithio, byddant yn ymateb gyda syniadau syml ond effeithiol fel defnyddio drôn.

“Nid ydym wedi clywed am ddefnydd o’r dechneg hon unrhyw le yn y byd i ddarparu band eang llinell sefydlog a byddwn yn edrych i weld os allwn ddilyn yr un drefn er mwyn cysylltu cymunedau eraill mewn sefyllfa debyg.

“Mae Cyflymu Cymru wedi profi’n llwyddiant ysgubol fel partneriaeth cyhoeddus-preifat a dim ond un enghraifft fach yw hon o’r heriau mae ein peirianwyr wedi wynebu wrth ledu band eang uwchgyflym ar draws y wlad.”

Dywedodd Arweinydd y Tŷ gyda chyfrifoldeb am y maes Digidol o fewn Llywodraeth Cymru, Julie James: “Nod Cyflymu Cymru yw darparu band eang cyflymach mewn ardaloedd na fyddai yn ei dderbyn fel arall. Mae Pontfadog yn enghraifft wych o gymuned wledig na fyddai wedi cael band eang uwchgyflym heb waith y rhaglen hon. Yn aml mae’n galw am waith heriol ac anodd ond mae’n gwneud gwahaniaeth gwirioneddol i rwydweithiau digidol Cymru, gyda dros 650,000 adeilad ar draws y wlad yn gallu cael y gwasanaeth yn dilyn gwaith Cyflymu Cymru.”

Os bydd profion yn llwyddiannus, bydd Openreach yn edrych i gyflwyno cynlluniau i hyfforddi rhai peirianwyr dethol i gynnal dronau mewn timau peirianneg ar draws y Deyrnas Unedig.

Yn ôl y data annibynnol diweddaraf gan Thinkbroadband.com, erbyn hyn mae dros 92% o gartrefi a busnesau Cymru yn gallu cael gwasanaeth band eang uwchgyflym ar gyflymder o 24Mbps ac uwch[2], ac ar draws y wlad mae dros 650,000 adeilad yn gallu cael gwasanaeth dros 30Mbps yn dilyn gwaith partneriaeth Cyflymu Cymru.

Cyflymu Cymru yw’r bartneriaeth rhwng Llywodraeth Cymru, BT, Llywodraeth San Steffan & Cronfa Datblygu Rhanbarthol Ewrop (ERDF) er lledu band eang cyflym i ardaloedd na fyddai yn ei gael fel arall.
