AVON, IN, December 21, 2016 /24-7PressRelease/ — The Indiana medical malpractice law firm of Baker & Gilchrist has awarded scholarships to three students from across the United States who hope to make the field of medicine a safer place for patients. The scholarships, which totaled $2,500, were awarded based on essays the students submitted to propose solutions to the dangerous problem of medical errors, which claim more than 250,000 lives per year.
Out of dozens of thoughtful essay entries, these are the students who stood out the most:
First place: Mary Graham, Texas A&M
Graham is pursuing a degree in community health. She hopes to work internationally to develop and evaluate health programs. She won $1,250 for her video essay on improving health literacy rates among patients.
Second place: Brandy Gunsolus, Rutgers University, School of Health Professions
Gunsolus is wrapping up her final year as a graduate student pursuing an advanced practice doctorate in clinical laboratory science. She aims to improve patient care by working with physicians and other practitioners to ensure appropriate test utilization and correct test interpretation. She won $750 for her essay on preventing diagnostic errors.
Third place: Michael Perry, DePaul University, Kellstadt Graduate School of Business
Perry is working on his master’s degree with the goal of becoming a leader for positive change in his community. He won $500 for his essay on preventing medication errors.
Baker & Gilchrist is proud to help further the educational endeavors of these three bright young minds. The winning essays are now posted on the firm’s website.
“Our firm’s scholarship program is based on the hope that the next generation will continue to shape the future of healthcare and find ways to improve patient healthcare,” attorney Caroline A. Gilchrist explains. “We appreciated the efforts by all of the participants to identify ways to improve patient care now and extend our congratulations to the three winners.”
